Offline Maps

Can I add offline maps to my CloudMade iPhone or mobile applications?

CloudMade’s iPhone SDK and our Mobile SDKs do not have built-in support for offline maps. To add offline maps to an application you need to implement your own storage system and your own method to retrieve and display the map tiles from the device. You can find some tips about how to do this on the iPhone at the iPhone SDK Forum. We will add full offline support for our SDKs later.

Are there additional fees for adding offline maps to an iPhone or mobile application?

Yes. To add offline maps support to your application, Mass Downloads must be enabled for your API Key. You can request that Mass Downloads are enabled by sending email to developer-sales@cloudmade.com. Your email should include the API key that you wish to use Mass Downloads with.

How much does it cost to add Mass Downloads of map tiles to an application?

Mass Downloads are map tiles that are downloaded to a device for later display and re-use. Using Mass Downloaded map tiles carries additional fee that will be added to your account each month. The fee structure is as follows:

• 0 – 10 million map tiles $50 per million map tiles
• 10 – 50 million map tiles $40 per million map tiles
• 50 million+ map tiles $30 per million map tiles

Will you be adding support for offline routing, geocoding and local search?

Yes – we will be adding support for more offline functionality throughout 2011.

How can I use Mass Downloads service?

Mass Downloads is accessible by the links like http://md-tile.cloudmade.com/YOUR-API-KEY-GOES-HERE/1/256/5/16/10.png. Now there is no any mechanism of the downloading tiles as some defined set of them, you can just download tiles one by one by requesting the specified url. We plan to add functionality for mass downloading some set of tiles, but it won’t be ready earlier then the end of this year.
